RV REFRIGERATOR
The RV refrigerator works differently than your normal kitchen refrigerator. Instead of adding coolness with a compressor, the heat is drawn out, or absorbed out of the unit. The RV
needs to be level in order for the fridge to work properly. Eventually an uneven unit will be damaged permanently and you'll need to get a
replacement one.
Practical tips for getting the most out of your RV refrigerator:
- Don't overpack the box - it won't be able to cool enough and everything will spoil
- Keep the unit level to prevent damage
- Limit the number of times you open the door, as that every time it opens you lose some coolness
- Install a 12 volt vent fan at the back of the refrigerator to assist with directing heat away from the cooling box
- Regularly inspect and clean the doors and seals. Clean often and replace any cracked or broken parts.
Our research indicates that it's very hard to find RV refrigerators to buy "off the shelf". There are several places that offer to repair
existing units or supply you with replacement parts. Your first choice for buying an entirely new refrigerator would be to visit your local RV
dealer. They probably either have some on hand or could easily order you one from the manufacturer. Expect to pay handsomely for a new unit as
they are definitely a specialty item.
Your next best option to a built in unit is a portable rv refrigerator that looks much like a standard cooler but with venting on the side.
They average between $600 and $700 in price, but they have the added convenience of portability.
